Resolution 2821 (South Sudan) S/RES/2821

29 May 2026

On 29 May 2026 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2821 on the situation in South Sudan. Resolution 2821 renewed the sanctions regime, including targeted sanctions and an arms embargo, until 31 May 2027, as well as the mandate of the Panel of Experts of the 2206 South Sudan Sanctions Committee until 1 July 2027. The resolution emphasizes that “the transitional government bears the primary responsibility to protect its population from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity, and expressing concern that, despite the signing of the Revitalised Agreement, violations and abuses including those involving gender-based violence continue to occur, which may amount to international crimes, including war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
