Global Centre Country Advocacy

The Global Centre tirelessly advocates for populations across the globe who are enduring or at risk of atrocity crimes. The pages below provide a deeper look into our country-specific advocacy work.

Afghanistan
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the country has faced an escalating human rights and humanitarian crisis. Throughout 2021 and beyond the Global Centre has engaged in sustained advocacy efforts to help catalyze an appropriate international response.

Central Sahel
Recurrent and expanding violence perpetrated by armed Islamist groups, as well as security operations to confront them, threaten populations in the Central Sahel – Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – with violations that likely amount to crimes against humanity and war crimes. To shift national, regional and international policy towards a more people-centered and effective approach, and to empower Sahelian civil society and affected communities to take their rightful role in policymaking and peacebuilding, the Global Centre has participated in the People's Coalition for the Sahel since 2020.

China
China has perpetrated repressive campaigns against religious and ethnic minorities for several decades. The systematic persecution of Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim and/or Turkic groups in China may amount to crimes against humanity and genocide. The Global Centre has worked alongside a broad NGO coalition to expose and end these abuses in Xinjiang, as well as in the Tibetan Autonomous Region (Tibet).

Democratic People's Republic of Korea
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, is one of the most authoritarian and repressive countries in the world, severely restricting universal human rights in a widespread manner. For over a decade, the Global Centre has worked with affected communities to reinvigorate international attention on the ongoing human rights crisis in the DPRK.

Ethiopia
In November 2020, following months of escalating political tensions, the federal government of Ethiopia launched a military offensive in the Tigray region against the governing Tigray People’s Liberation Front. The conflict caused immense human suffering, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of civilians. From the outset of the conflict and following the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in November 2022, the Global Centre has played a pivotal role in organizing international advocacy efforts to highlight the severity of the crisis and urge a robust international response.

Iraq
From 2014 to 2017 the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) perpetrated crimes against humanity and genocide against minority populations in Iraq, including the Yazidi people. In response to these atrocities, the Global Centre has engaged in concerted advocacy efforts since 2016 to mobilize the international community toward accountability for victims and survivors, calling for an international and independent investigation into ISIL’s crimes.

“Our organization was created for moments when atrocity crimes are not abstract risks but active, escalating realities and when the gap between principles and protection must be closed through political courage and practical cooperation.”

Executive Director
Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory
For over a decade the Global Centre has sought to clearly articulate the nature of the risks to populations in Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) and of the crimes being perpetrated in Gaza. The Global Centre has maintained this strong framing in all our work, utilizing a fact-based narrative focused on the reality for Palestinian populations across the OPT, as well as the credible investigations by independent experts, human rights organizations, UN commissions and international courts.

Myanmar (Burma)
Since its inception in 2008, the Global Centre has been an unwavering advocate for addressing the long-standing atrocity risks and human rights abuses in Myanmar (Burma). Our work has evolved in response to the various crises over the past 15 years, but it has consistently focused on highlighting the root causes of atrocity crimes and pushing for justice for populations who have faced, or continue to face, war crimes, crimes against humanity and/or genocide.
