On 15 December 2015 the UN Security Council passed Resolution 2252 on South Sudan. Resolution 2252 emphasizes the importance of accountability for those responsible for violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws as well as reaffirming the Government of South Sudan bears the primary responsibility to protect its populations from crimes against humanity, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and genocide. Resolution 2252 also extends the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) until 31 July 2016.
