Emerging approaches to the protection of civilians in the age of AI

20 May 2026

28 MAY 2026 | 10:30 AM EDT | 4:30 PM CEST | REGISTER FOR ZOOM

The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect and Access Now will host an online roundtable discussion on the UN Secretary-General’s Protection of Civilians Report (PoC Report). We will be joined by experts from UNESCO, the Ambassador for Cybersecurity and Digitalisation of Luxembourg and Digital Security Lab Ukraine to unpack the PoC Report through a multistakeholder perspective.

The discussion will explore emerging approaches to atrocity prevention and response, as well as broader issues surrounding the protection of civilian data and digital infrastructure in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Rather than centering AI itself, the event will examine the implications for civilian protection in societies increasingly dependent on digital systems that are neither designed by nor for populations at risk and that often fall outside existing international legal frameworks applicable in conflict.

MODERATOR:

Jaclyn Streitfeld-Hall, Deputy Executive Director, Global Centre for R2P

DISCUSSANTS:

      • Luc Dockendorf, Ambassador for Cybersecurity and Digitalisation, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Luxembourg
      • Leona Verdadero, Programme Specialist, Digital Policies and Digital Transformation Section, Communication and Information Sector of UNESCO
      • Giulio Coppi, Senior Humanitarian Officer, Access Now
      • Tetiana Avdieieva, Senior Legal Counsel, Digital Security Lab Ukraine (DSLU)
