Joint Statement: Interim Transfer of the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect to the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect

14 May 2021

The World Federalist Movement/Institute for Global Policy (WFM/IGP) and the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P) jointly announces today the interim transfer of the Secretariat of the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect (ICRtoP) beginning 17 May through 17 November 2021, after which time a review will be conducted. WFM/IGP will maintain a seat on the Coalition’s Steering Committee during this time.

Launched in 2009, the ICRtoP’s mission is to strengthen normative consensus for the Responsibility to Protect (RtoP). The RtoP norm is the international community’s commitment to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. ICRtoP works to protect populations by moving beyond the UN towards galvanizing civil society around conflict prevention and protection.

The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect made the offer to host the Secretariat in light of the recent announcement by WFM/IGP to minimize operations as it prepares the foundation for a new decade of impact and growth to achieve federalism. Pending a successful review in November, GCR2P hopes to host the Coalition on an ongoing basis.
