Resolution 71/198 (Extrajudicial killings) S/RES/71/198

19 December 2016

On 19 December 2016 the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 71/198 on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. The resolution calls upon all states to prevent extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and to comply with their obligations under the relevant provisions of international human rights instruments. Resolution 71/198 also “[acknowledges] that extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions may under certain circumstances amount to genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes, as defined in international law, including in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and recalling in this regard that each individual State has the responsibility to protect its populations from such crimes.”
