Resolution 22/22 (Prevention of Genocide) A/HRC/RES/22/22

22 March 2013

On 22 March 2013, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the UN Human Rights Council passed Resolution 22/22. The resolution expresses deep concern about the occurrence of genocide in recent history and reiterates “the responsibility of each individual state to protect its population from genocide;” stating that a key way to achieve this is through identifying root causes and early warning signs. The resolution also encourages states to consider appointing focal points on the prevention of genocide and requests that the High Commissioner organizes a high-level discussion panel on the matter of genocide.
