Joint NGO Letters on the 2021 UN Human Rights Council Elections

26 May 2021

On 26 May the Global Centre joined a number of other NGOs and civil society organizations in urging the UN regional groups to ensure a competitive election for the 2022-2024 UN Human Rights Council (HRC) term. The letters reminded member states of the membership standards of the HRC, specifically the promise to promote and protect human rights, and urged them to refrain from voting for any candidates that do not meet these standards, including those accused of committing gross violations of human rights or who are flagrantly refusing to cooperate with the HRC and its mechanisms.

Letters were sent to each of the five regional groupings: African, Asia and the Pacific, Eastern European (EEG), Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC), and Western Europe and Other States (WEOG). Three of the regions, WEOG, EEG, and Asia and the Pacific are currently running clean slates for the upcoming election.  The letters have been translated into English, Spanish and French.
