On 12 October the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted Resolution 54/31, which renewed the mandate of the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Central African Republic for a period of one year. The resolution called for a high-level dialogue to assess human rights developments, with a particular focus on the situation of children, at the HRC’s 55th session. The resolution also called for the Independent Expert to provide an oral update at the HRC’s 56th session and to submit a written report at its 57th session, as well as the 79th session of the General Assembly. The resolution recalled that “the Central African Republic bears the primary responsibility to protect its populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.” The resolution was adopted without a vote.
