Statement by Mr. Adama Dieng, United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, and Ms. Jennifer Welsh, United Nations Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect, on the situation in Egypt

The Special Advisers on the Prevention of Genocide, Mr. Adama Dieng, and on the Responsibility to Protect, Ms. Jennifer Welsh, express their serious concern on the 14 August violence in Egypt, during which security forces used excessive force against demonstrators in the city of Cairo. The Special Advisers call on the Egyptian authorities to conduct a prompt, independent and effective investigation into the violence and reiterate that all those responsible for perpetrating violence must be held to account.
