Press Statement on Situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo SC/12734-AFR/3536

On 24 February 2017 the UN security Council (UNSC) released a press statement on the deteriorating situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).The UNSC condemned the recent violence in the Kasaï region and expressed grave concern at the recent reports of serious violations of international humanitarian law committed by local militia in the region, including unlawful recruitment and use of child soldiers and of killings of civilians by members DRC security forces. The UNSC also stated these violations may constitute war crimes under international law. Additonally the statement "recalled that the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo bears the primary responsibility to protect civilians" and urged the government to exercise maximum restraint in its efforts to restore order.
