UN General Assembly Ministerial Side-Event "The Fight Against Impunity: Bringing Da'esh to Justice"
The Ministerial Side Event was an opportunity for States, the United Nations, and civil society to demonstrate their commitment to ensuring Da'esh and its followers are held to account for their crimes worldwide, by discussing steps towards criminal worldwide, by discussing steps towards criminal accountability for Da'esh's actions, delivering justice for the victims, and joining in a campaign to achieve this.
The event featured speeches by Ms. Nadia Murad Basee Taha, the new UNODC Goodwill Ambassador and a survivor of human trafficking by Da'esh, and Ms. Amal Clooney, international human rights barrister and attorney for Ms. Murad. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein, and the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Mr. Adama Dieng, also delivered speeches.
Dr. Simon Adams, Executive Director of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, moderated the event. The Secretary-General of Amnesty International, Mr. Salil Shetty, delivered a statement on behalf of Amnesty International, Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, and Yazda.
The event was organized by the Permanent Missions of Belgium, Iraq and the United Kingdom.
