Summary of the Fourth Meeting of the Global Network of R2P Focal Points
The Governments of Botswana and the Netherlands co-hosted the fourth annual meeting of the Global Network of R2P Focal Points in Gaborone, Botswana, on 12 and 13 June in association with the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. The meeting brought together senior government officials from more than 30 countries as well as high-level representatives from ECOWAS, SADC and the UN, including the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect, Dr. Jennifer Welsh.
The focus of the Botswana meeting was capacity building and R2P, addressing how improving the rule of law and the security sector as well as engaging the business sector and communities affected by mass atrocities could help in the establishment of strong national mechanisms for prevention.
The Summary of the Fourth Meeting of the Global Network of R2P Focal Points provides an overview of the important discussions that took place in Gaborone and concludes with recommendations for how governments can make tangible improvements for the prevention of mass atrocities.
